Yes! It’s a 9-Peat crown for the CKSC scout basketball team at the annual Baden Powell Cup basketball tournament. Known as the "Blazing Dragons" in the school and community circle, the scout team earned its ninth straight title during the 11th Baden Powell Cup tournament by toppling Philadelphia High School, 103-39, in the final game of the competition. The title run started way back in 2006 with one of the assistant coaches, Michael Marc Chua, still playing at that time.

The team started its 2014 title retention bid with a rousing victory over Philippine Tiong Se Academy, 100-39, last January 10. Then the team swept past Republic Institute, 72-54. In its third game, the team fell prey to Philadelphia High School when they played at the latter’s court, 51-58. This did not startle the team; instead, it made the scout players even more determined to strive for better performance. The Blazing Dragons bounced back in its next assignment by walloping St. Stephen’s High School, 82-42. The same fate befell the Blazing Dragon’s last elimination round opponent, Elyseum Christian School, which lost to the former to the score of 82-61.

Earning the top seed after the single round elimination series, CKSC again faced St. Stephen’s High School in the semi-final game, winning handily, 76-35. Philadelphia High School defeated Elyseum Christian School in the other semifinal pairing, 77-66, and earned the right to challenge CKSC for the BP Cup title.

Learning from its mistakes during the elimination round, Coach Herbert Cuenca and his assistants, Chester Kevin Sy and Michael Marc Chua, all proud CKSC alumni, made adjustments to the game plan of the team and never gave Philadelphia High School the chance to thwart their title defense bid. CKSC swept the best-of-three championship series, winning the two games in huge margins, to create a dynasty of sorts in the annual tournament.

Eduard Erick Tan, the graduating team skipper, was voted Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Joining him in the mythical five were Gerrald Tagle of St. Stephen’s High School, John Wilbert Midel of Philadelphia High School, Jygz Fajardo of Elyseum Christian School, and Vinci Vic Yasul of CKSC.

The triumphant team also drew good performance from Lance Jasper Yap, Mike Jericho Mojica, Aldwin Terence Lee, Franz Nathan Sy, Keane Audric Tiu, John Sedryck Shi, Anson Tyson Que, Julius Floyd Capati, Robert Angelo Martin, Garwynn Ong, Karl Ivan Ng, Federico Uy, and Jonathan Co.

Supporting the team throughout its campaign were volunteer committee members, composed of Yan Yee Kua, Hannibal Chua, Robert Guerra, Joyce Dy, Oliver Liu, and Wai Lin Sing.

Congratulations, CKSC Blazing Dragons scout basketball team, you are truly the pride and honor of the Alma Mater!
