Ryan Jericho Sy Wins Bronze in HK Po Leung Kuk Math Contest

Young Filipino elementary students finished first runner-up overall by winning 12 individual medals and two merit awards in 17th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest held recently in Hong Kong.

Philippine Team C composed of John Henry Marquez of UP Integrated School, Stefan Marcus Ong, and Steven Ting Reyes of St. Jude Catholic School, and William Joshua King of Bethany Christian School copped first runner-up overall in the group contest and took home a merit award in the team contest.

In the individual contest, Marquez, Ong, and Reyes won the country’s three gold medals and King won a silver medal.

“We are so happy that our Filipino math wizards achieved another feat. This is the Philippines’ strongest performance in the contest since 2010,” said Simon Chua, head of the Philippine delegation and president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MTG).

Philippine Team A composed of Genrish Wendell Ng of St. Jude Catholic School, Bert Joseph Tropicales of Southernside Montessori School, Karl Raymond Roque of Notre Dame of Greater Manila and Mickel Lyle Angelo Pe of Antique SPED Center won a merit award in the team contest.

Roque bagged a silver medal and Tropicales grabbed a bronze in the individual contest.

Other silver medalists are Immanuel Josiah Balete of St. Stephen’s High School and Andrhea San Gabriel of Small World Christian School Foundation.

Patrick Nino Policarpio of Greenpark Montessori Learning Center, Bryce Ainsley Sanchez of Grace Christian College, Maxinne Louise Dominique Co of Ateneo De Iloilo-SMCS and Ryan Jericho Sy of Chiang Kai Shek College all won bronze medals.

Other members of the Philippine team are Raymund Carlo Masbano of St. John’s Institute and Patricia Faith Capito of UP Integrated School.

Countries which participated in the contest were the US, Philippines, Australia, Bulgaria, China, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan and Thailand.
