George Tanlimco Jr., a sixteen year old senior high school student of our college, was recently chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines. He was the only Metro Manila bet to be chosen to this elite group of national scout awardees in ceremonies held at the Makati City Session Hall last October 2009.
Spending half of his time as a boy scout and living up to the scout slogan of “Laging Handa (Always Ready)”, Tanlimco was inspired to do his best ever since he joined the Scout Movement in Grade One. One of his outstanding virtues is his patience. He could handle a class of 40 grade school pupils without losing his patience. He is good in academics, active as a scout, and he has been joining national events as well as international events in scouting.
What made Tanlimco clinched the prestigious award is his excellent communication skills and good academic background. Among his many achievements as a scout was his expertise in organizing 2009 earth hour campaign of the CKSC Scout Center. He also provides assistance to different organizations in need of scouting services. To name a few, the Association of Philippine Volunteer Fire Brigades Inc; the Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry; the World Bank; the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas; and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Furthermore, since 2003 the teenager has been taking part in the annual international coastal cleanup campaign. Under the Scout Builders Corps, he also participated in its pilot project at the Gawad Kalinga site in Pinagsama, Taguig City.
Tanlimco, who wants to be a lawyer or a doctor someday, said that after receiving this award, he has been inspired to be more active in the boy scout movement. “I will be a boy scout as long as I can be one, As long as I can balance my academics with scouting, I will remain a boy scout.”
The criteria for judging were: Performance in terms of community service, scholastic achievements, and scouting participation, character, where a candidate is expected to live up to the ideals of scouting, capability to observe religious obligations, and communication skills.
