Two Fourth Year High School Students Landed Prominently in 7th Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (SMO)

Erik Lance Astillero and Geovin Dexter Uy, both fourth year high school students enrolled in the star section at Chiang Kai Shek College figured prominently in the recently concluded 7th Southeast Mathematical Olympiad held in Chang Hua County Lukang Town in Taiwan from August 15-22, 2010.

178 contestants from 46 teams coming from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, South Africa, Thailand and the Philippines participated in the contest and they were welcomed warmly by the town mayor herself, Ms. Wang Hui-Mei.

The Philippines sent two teams of three members each from St. Jude Catholic School, Grace Christian College, and Chiang Kai Shek College. Erik Lance Astillero was the only one of the two to receive a bronze medal. Geovin, together with three other Philippine delegates, got a Merit Award. The Math Olympiad was good for two days of which a set of four problems were given each day. The contestants had to finish each set within four hours.

The competition ended with China Zhejiang team winning the most with 6 gold or a total of 16 medals in all.

The Philippine team was headed by Mr. Anthony Ang and Dr. Archival Rodriguez, who are both officers of the Mathematical Trainers Guild.
