Model Overseas Chinese School Award

The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China (PROC) recently recognized Chiang Kai Shek College as one of the “Model Overseas Chinese Schools” in a ceremony held at the college auditorium last June 8, 2011. The prestigious award was presented by His Excellency, Ambassador Liu Jian Chao, and other key officers of the PROC Embassy in the Philippines.

During his speech, Ambassador Liu highlighted the fact that out of tens of thousands of Chinese schools that have opened worldwide, only fifty-eight (58) schools were selected as Model Overseas Chinese Schools, and Chiang Kai Shek College is one of the four lucky institutions to have received this recognition in the Philippines. Included in the award is the presentation of one hundred thousand renminbi (100,000 rmb) to the College for its in-service seminars, workshops, and other academic-related projects both in the local and international settings. The Ambassador proudly handed the check over to Chiang Kai Shek College President Dr. Bee Ching U. Ong Kian Koc, saying he was honored to give the award to CKSC which has produced many successful alumni. This financial support also aims to further strengthen Chinese culture and education.

In her thank-you speech, Dr. Ong, mentioned that the good news that the "Model Overseas Chinese School" award was to be bestowed to CKSC had been known since 2009. She enumerated some of the expenditures for the propagation of education and Chinese culture:
April 2010 - the College President, together with the Elementary Chinese Supervisor, Ms. Le Song Yap and Ms. Alice Chang of the College Department attended the 2010 South East Asian Countries Forum on Mandarin Education for College, High School and Elementary Principals in Beijing.
December 2010 - twenty-five (25) teachers from CKSC and other Chinese schools went to Beijing to attend the 2010 Philippine International High Level Mandarin Language Seminar-Workshop organized by the International Propagation of Chinese Language Center.
April 2011 - seven high school students were chosen to attend the 6th High School Students Chinese Culture Summer Camp in Angeles University Foundation.
May 2011 - Music Director Mrs. Emilia Tan visited the Gulangyu School of Music in Xiamen. Three Chinese teachers: Ms. Cassandra Lim, Mrs. Wang Yin, and Mrs. Rosy Manabat attended a seminar-workshop on library services in Xiamen University.

The cash prize was utilized for the acquisition of library reference materials, overhead projectors, computers, white boards for use in the high school and elementary classrooms, and for the holding of various contests like plays, oratorical, painting, Chinese-English translation, and Chinese singing contests among others.

During her welcome remarks, CKSC Board of Trustees Executive Vice Chairman Nelly Guevarra praised the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office for their concern and support for overseas Chinese education and culture. She said being awarded as model Chinese school is indeed a great honor and encouragement for the school to strive harder.

Witnessing the turnover ceremony were the members of the CKSC Board of Trustees, the school administrators, and the alumni association, together with the junior and senior high school students of the college.
