JUMPSTART: School Readiness Camp FAQs

WHO ARE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS (OTs)?

“OTs help children engage in meaningful activities (called occupations) that they need to do &/or want to do so that they stay healthy & become successful in the home, school, & community.” (Adapted from AOTA, 2017)

HOW CAN OTs HELP MY CHILD WHO’S STUDYING IN A REGULAR SCHOOL?

Students in regular schools may have difficulty with some aspects of learning, such as concentrating, following directions, & persisting with difficult tasks. Some of them may not be able to hold a pencil well, cooperate with others, or match letters & words. All these affect a child’s classroom performance. OTs help students develop skills needed to be more successful in these tasks for the coming school year.

WHAT WILL I EXPECT FOR MY CHILD IN THE JUMPSTART PROGRAM?

The Jumpstart program will led by two experienced OTs. Combined, they have 30 years of experience in working with children who have learning difficulties. In each session, there will be different activities that will target the necessary skillsets for learning.

WHAT ARE THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO HAVE OPTIMAL SCHOOL PARTICIPATION?

  • Personal skills (motor skills, use of visual perception, sensory processing, self-care skills)
  • Work behavior (attention, concentration, impulse control, frustration tolerance)
  • Executive functions (working memory, response inhibition, self-regulation)

All these are needed by your child in order to prepare him for more optimal performance inside the classroom. Rest assured that there will be a controlled OT:student ratio (1 OT to 5 students only) in order to give students more individualized attention & support.
