IB-PYP Learners Explore History, Culture, and Global Connections Through “Week Without Walls”

Students from our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme recently took part in an immersive learning experience that brought history, culture, and global connections to life.
As part of the programme’s “Week Without Walls,” students visited a museum to explore the Philippines’ rich maritime history and learn about the Manila–Acapulco Galleon Trade. The historic trade route connected the Philippines and Mexico, allowing people, goods, ideas, and cultures to move across the ocean and interact in different parts of the world.
The visit gave students an opportunity to see history beyond the classroom. As they walked through the museum, they learned about the important role of the Philippines in maritime exchange and gained a deeper understanding of how movement and interaction can shape places, communities, and cultures.
The experience was closely connected to the students’ second unit of inquiry, “Where We Are in Place and Time”. Through firsthand learning, they explored the relationships among people, places, time, and communities. They also began examining key concepts such as location, time, community, adaptation, and change.
Throughout the visit, students applied a range of IB learning skills, including thinking, communication, and self-management. They asked questions, made connections, and participated in collaborative discussions. One central question guided their reflection: “How do people’s migration and interactions change a place, a community, or even a culture?”
The experience also demonstrated the value of “Week Without Walls” as an extension of the IB Primary Years Programme. By stepping outside the school and entering the community and the real world, students were able to connect classroom learning with their own experiences. They deepened their understanding through practice and developed empathy and a sense of responsibility through direct engagement.
The IB Primary Years Programme is built around six transdisciplinary themes: “Who We Are”, “Where We Are in Place and Time”, “How We Express Ourselves”, “How the World Works”, “How We Organize Ourselves”, and “Sharing the Planet.” These themes encourage students to cross disciplinary boundaries and learn from authentic situations.
The programme follows an inquiry-based educational philosophy. Rather than relying solely on one-way instruction, it encourages students to ask questions, gather information, analyze evidence, think critically, and take action. Teachers serve as facilitators, helping students connect knowledge, skills, and attitudes while developing the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
Leaving the museum did not mark the end of the students’ learning. Instead, the visit became a starting point for further inquiry. Students returned to the classroom with more than photographs and visit records. They also brought new questions, discoveries, and a deeper curiosity about the connections between the past and the present.
For the learners of the CKSian IB Primary Years Programme, the journey of exploring the past has only just begun. Through experiences that connect the local with the global and the past with the future, the school continues to nurture internationally minded, inquisitive lifelong learners who remain connected to their homeland while embracing the wider world.
