From Theory to Practice: DP Biology Students Learn the Science of Blood Pressure

Learning comes alive when knowledge moves beyond the classroom. CKS College DP Biology students recently engaged in an experiential learning session on blood pressure measurement and interpretation, led by school physician Dr. Medolyn Chicano as the community expert.
While the DP Biology subject guide requires students to develop the skill of interpreting systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements from data and graphs, this learning experience extended beyond the prescribed requirement. Students had the opportunity to develop a practical skill by learning how to properly measure blood pressure using both digital and analog sphygmomanometers and interpret the readings they obtained.
Through Dr. Chicano’s expert guidance, students connected biological concepts with an authentic health-care application. The experience strengthened not only their understanding of blood pressure but also their ability to apply scientific knowledge in a real-world context.
By bridging classroom theory with hands-on practice, the activity exemplified meaningful experiential learning—empowering students to see how the science they study can be applied to everyday health and well-being.
