Trisha Sia is Manila Bulletin Sketchfest Champion

“Barong is meticulously made with hands, so it’s priceless,” he said. “Aside from barong and kimona, the bamboo house is the new version of our native hut. Its structure is carefully planned.”

For the Junior Category, University of the East-Caloocan Fine Arts, Major in Advertising, student Nikko Pelaez, 18,won a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and P 5,000 for his winning entry “Kalinga.”

“The old lady in my artwork is the last tattoo artist in her family in Kalinga. She became my inspiration to keep the Filipino culture alive,” he said.

CKSC grade 5 pupil Trisha Danielle Sia, 10, won a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 for her artwork “BuhayPinoy: Masaya at Makulay” after winning first prize in the Kiddie Category.

“I [sketched] jeep, carabao, fish, and farmers, because they are identified with Filipinos,” she said.

Other winners are Edwin Castillo (second prize) and Romnick Diez (third prize) for the Senior Category; Rojan Elmo Barcelon (second prize) and Vince Galvin Tangcuenco (third prize) for the Junior Category; and Christian Luke Alarcon (second prize) and Wilbert Sebastian Villareal (third prize) for the Kiddie Category.

Special awards were also given to Eduardo Perreras (Manila Bulletin’s Choice), Edu Perreras (Makati’s Choice), Eliseo Perreras (Circuit Makati’s Choice), and Jaliyah Minanang (Dong-A’s Choice).

Bearing the theme “Filipino Ingenuity: Made in the Philippines,” the on-the-spot poster-making competition aims to showcase the talent of Filipino artists.

Judging a total of 432 entries are Manila Bulletin External Affairs Head Barbie Atienza, Manila Bulletin Public Relations Manager Badette Cunanan, Ayala Land Marketing Manager Monique Castañeda, Crown Supply Corporation Brand Manager Roselle Rivera, and painters Vincent Padilla and Francis Nacion.

Artworks were judged based on the following criteria: adherence and consistency with the theme (45 percent); creativity and composition (30 percent); and originality (25 percent).

The arts competition spearheaded by the Philippines’ Leading National Newspaper was made possible by its sponsors Ayala Land, Dong A Faber Castell, National Bookstore, Burger King, Hero Channel, and Art + Magazine.
