Paul Julian Hao, Valedictorian of CKSC High School Class 2008 and one of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines for 2007 was recently declared as one of the five winners in the Fourth Pambansang Gawad sa Ulirang Kabataan by the Department of Education over 31 high school nominees from public and private schools held at Luneta Park last June 12, 2008. DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapuz, Undersecretary Vilma Labrador, Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya and NCAA Chair Cecil Guidote-Alvarez were some of the key persons who witnessed the awarding ceremonies.

The other 4 winners are Benralph Yu of Davao City National High School, Stephen Panol of Fort Bonifacio High School in Makati City, Jamil Repors of Kidapawan National High School and Kate Marie Benitez of Samal National High School. The awardees are all achievers, leaders and active community workers. All graduated with top honors in their secondary schools last school year. Paul Julian Hao, who was ranked first among the winners, was also one of the Ten Outstanding Chinese-Filipino students in the Philippines during the SY 2007-2008.

These 5 winners went through a rigid process. The criteria for selection were personality and character-20 percent, critical thinking-10 percent, rhetoric-10 percent, quality and content-10 percent, and content-50 percent. Five evaluators, eight interviewers and three judges from the academe, government and private sectors were invited during the three-day selection process.

The judges during the final interview were Commissioner Raul Dominic Badilla of the National Youth Commission, Atty. Pablo Trillana of the Asian Development Bank of the Philippines and Justice Antonio Nachura of the Department of Justice.

The Pambansang Gawad coincides with the observance of the 110th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
