The inquisitive girls and boys of Chiang Kai Shek College celebrated their annual Science Week last September 21-24, 2021 with the theme of “Agham at Teknolohiya: Sandigan ng Kalusugan, Kaayusan at Kinabukasan”. Students from grades 1 to 6 performed and participated in different fun and easy science experiments and activities with the guidance of their wise science teachers.
Students and teachers in grade one had a blast in creating an invisible ink using only baking soda and water solution or white crayon and using grape juice to reveal the secret message. Making the invisible ink sparked the students’ creativity and thirst for experiments as they can easily make something from things that can be found in the house.
The grade two students released their stress in making an Ooblek Stress Ball using corn starch flour, water, and balloons. This fun, gooey, and squishy fluid helped the students understand the properties of liquid and solid. This activity is also one of the best examples of why learning while playing is a great way to instill lessons in young students.
The grade three students celebrated Science week by going on a virtual field trip through the educational website of San Diego Zoo which is (https://kids.sandiegowildlifealliance.org/videos). The students watched animals through live cameras and videos that are on the website while the teachers introduced some facts and trivia about the animals in the zoo. In addition, they also watched some fun activities that they can do on their own such as slimes and platypus bookmarks.
Students from grade four had a different kind of fun, as they indulged in various exciting challenges prepared by the teachers. Each section had a specific challenge to accomplish, these were the Yank Me, Speed Eraser, Stick the Landing, and Hang Over. Some students admitted that they had a hard time completing the tasks, but the others commented that their tasks were a piece of cake. While enjoying the challenges they also understood the science behind those tasks, and they shared what they learned in their science class.
The grade five students became magicians by doing their science experiments. They performed three tricks by using the materials that could be found at home. These were turning colored water to clear water, inflating a balloon without blowing on it, and skewering in an inflated balloon. The students had fun performing the magic tricks and learned a lot in the discussion of the science behind those tricks.
Finally, the grade six students created their own inventions to fight the COVID-19, and this activity challenged the students’ minds to think creatively and innovatively. The students shared and explained their work in their science class.
The fun-filled Science week was a success. New learnings were discovered, shared, and displayed, and all of these happened because of the school’s knowledgeable science teachers, coordinator, and supervisor. Kudos also to Chiang Kai Shek College’s participative students and supportive parents.
