On January 30 and 31, 2014, as the Chinese community celebrated the sunny and joyful days leading to the Chinese New Year in downtown Binondo, the Chiang Kai Shek College Chinese Dance Troupe, Elementary Dance Troupe, Wushu Performing Group and Youth Choir were productive in giving festive mood to their community.
The CKSC Youth Choir serenaded the shoppers of SM Aura Taguig. The group sang a total of 8 songs, a compilation of both Chinese and English medley songs, accompanied by live grand piano music by Ms. Lyn Dimayuga and conducted by Ms. Aileen Go. Many by-passers were amazed and were awed with the group’s angelic voices. Some of the songs were Halo - Walking on Sunshine mash up, Ode to Joy, 國家 (My Country), 阿里山的姑娘 (Maiden of Alisan), 花飛花 (Flower Fly), 思念 (Missing Memories), 這是一個小世界 (It’s A Small World After All), and a tribute song.
The Elementary Chinese Dance Troupe performed at the De La Salle University - College of St. Benilde, SM Mall of Asia Atrium, and Chinoy TV “好棒” Hao Bang at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. Charming and pretty in their combined pink and silver costume, they surely captivated the heart of the spectators.
The Wushu Performing Group exhibited different martial arts stance at the De La Salle – College of St. Benilde and at the Lucky Chinatown Mall. As a tradition of Chinese culture to frighten away evil spirits and bring good luck for the New Year, a great colorful lion dance was also performed upon the request of the management of the Asia United Bank - Masangkay Branch.
The most memorable activity for the Chinese Dance Troupe was the celebration of Chinese New Year. They were showcased as the opening dance production number of ASAP 19 (Kapamilya Channel) which aired last January 26, 2014. The same group also performed at the Lucky Chinatown Mall, the SM MOA Atrium and Chinoy TV “好棒” Hao Bang at SM MOA Music Hall. The group fascinated their audience with two dances, namely: 茉莉花 (Jasmine Flower Umbrella Dance) and美麗 (You Are Beautiful). As part of Intercultural awareness of the City of Manila, the Chinatown Development Authority, chaired by Mayor Joseph Estrada, organized a Chinese New Year countdown at the Sta. Cruz Plaza Manila. Again, the Chinese Dance Troupe, together with Erika Robin Tanlo, Mary Grace Khu, and Dean Kyle Ang amazed the crowd with their rendition of “中國範兒”, a jovial song and dance number where the costumes of China’s different tribes were exhibited. It was shown as live telecast at Banana Nite (Kapamilya Channel).
To start the New “Wooden Horse” Year for Chiang Kai Shek College, two of our alumni, Ann Abigail Garza and Dean Kyle Ang, won 1st place and 1st runner-up respectively in the inaugural search for Chinoy Star Ka Na Singing Competition. Abigail Garza brought home PhP50,000 cash prize and a recording contract from Star Records with songs to be composed by Mr. Verhnee Saturno.
Good work, guys!
