Darren Mendell Chu Sy, who graduated salutatorian in CKSC high school class of 2007, is presently studying at Ateneo de Manila University. He is one of the six recipients of the 2008 Singapore Scholarship awarded by the Singapore government.
The Singapore Scholarship, which began in December 1998 during the 6th ASEAN Summit, is being offered to outstanding students from the ASEAN countries. So far, 79 Filipino scholars have been awarded the scholarship.
The awarding ceremony was held last July 15 at the Singaporean embassy chancery and witnessed by the proud parents and some foreign diplomats.
The six scholarships amounting to 24 million pesos are tenable at the National University, the Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Management University. Each scholarship is good for four years of tertiary study, and it covers tuition fees, airfares, annual living allowances, and other miscellaneous expenses. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic excellence, leadership qualities and their potential to contribute to community development. There is no bond period on the scholars but they are encouraged to return and serve their home countries upon graduation.
