What is the Montessori curriculum like?
CKS College Montessori is a place where children ages 3 to 5 years old, love to learn by doing, experimenting, and using all senses for experiential learning. We provide a hands-on classroom with learning materials for all of the main areas: practical living, sensory, math, art, music, language- English, Chinese, and Filipino, as well as geography, history, and science. Even the youngest children learn about the world!
Freedom of Movement: Absorbing a broad understanding of the world through hands-on materials, the children move about freely, choosing their “work” with responsibility and freedom. Their independence and self-confidence grow as they learn through activities that allow them to learn as individuals, at their own pace, and to reach their full potential.
Guidelines to Learning: Our school is based upon the fundamental need of each child for freedom within limits. Children long for doing things and tasks with their hands; to touch, to smell, to taste, to see, and to hear so that they may learn. They choose their “work” and in return, they concentrate on this for long periods without interruption.
Socializing as they learn, the children use their newly-acquired speech skills to express themselves as individuals as well as sharing about their life values, interests, and family members.
What is the CKS Montessori teaching like
We are a high-fidelity Montessori school, therefore we are strictly guided by Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy and teachings. We teach by showing the children how the work is done or how we gracefully and politely interact with each other in the classroom. The children are allowed to repeat the works that were shown to them as many times as they feel the need to do so. By practicing, they can master the skills and become ready for more challenges. Teachers observe and record the child’s work and only intervene when necessary or when the child explicitly asks for help. The school lets the child learn freely and discover his potential. Teachers, on the other hand, identify the needs and interests of the child and support this by showing interesting works to spark their curiosity to learn more about it.
How is the Montessori program different from traditional education or standard curriculum?
The Montessori program looks at the child as an individual with unique needs, interests, and learning curves. Therefore, the curriculum is specifically and specially made for each child, unlike a traditional or standard program wherein there is only one curriculum that fits all the children at every age or class level. In CKS College Montessori, the lessons in the curriculum are designed weekly and/or modified as often as possible as we follow their pace in development.
What distinguishes CKS College Montessori from other Montessori schools?
CKS College Montessori offers both premier English and Chinese curricula. Our English and Chinese teachers stay in the classroom during the whole class period, this way the children will be immersed in these languages through their constant interaction with the teachers and their peers.
Furthermore, our teachers are internationally trained and credentialed by the Montessori Teacher Preparation of the U.S., the American Montessori Society, the Montessori Institute of America, and Montessori Accreditation Council For Teacher Education (MACTE). These high standards of teacher qualification ensures only the best teaching quality and standard of the school.
We also take pride in our very rich environment. The classrooms are carefully prepared and designed to meet the children’s needs and interests. We have equipped the classrooms with Montessori materials for all areas of learning. We have also provided exciting outdoor activities such as gardening, biking, climbing, sliding, and fun sports like soccer and basketball. Our Prepared Environment will support each child’s interests and needs to become a well-rounded individual.
How does a student benefit from Montessori's mixed-age classroom setup?
A Montessori environment adapts to a ‘family-like’ set-up at home, where members of the family vary in age. The older children develop patience and understanding for their younger peers. They can experience guiding, leading, and teaching their younger classmates. They can transfer their knowledge by being a peer mentor and a model in the classroom. On the other hand, the younger children look up to the older children as their inspiration. They become motivated to accomplish tasks that were already performed by the older children. They develop brother-and-sister relationships where they look after and care for each other.
Moreso, having a mixed-age class will present different needs in all areas, may it be emotionally, physically, and cognitively. The teachers and the students will be able to work together and help each other in supporting all these needs.
How big are the classes?
In CKS South Forbes, our classroom will accommodate up to 25 students. We will be assigning 3 teachers in each class.
How do teachers assess and keep track of the student's progress?
We use a Daily Observation Sheet (DOS) to keep track of the works that the children choose from the shelf and those works that were presented or suggested to them during the day. We transfer and compile all these observations to the student’s tracking list which contains the scope and sequence of all the Montessori works. We mark each work as follows: presented, practiced, needs more practice, or mastered. These daily recordings will help the teachers plan for each child’s lesson the following week.
We also use the Transparent Classroom App to keep the parents updated weekly on their child’s activities in school. The teachers will post pictures of their work as well as write feedback about how they are doing.
How does a student transition from Montessori to traditional education in the Elementary program?
In our Montessori program, we develop the child’s initiative, concentration, and independence. All the materials they work on every day allow them to self-correct their work. They only ask for help when they feel the need to do so. They can get the work from the shelf and complete the task before they put them back on the shelf. They learn to work on their own and in groups. These are important qualities all children need to possess when they go to elementary as they face bigger challenges academically and socially. A traditional classroom would often have just one teacher for a class with 30 or more students. A child who is not able to concentrate and isolate himself from all the noise will be having a hard time listening to the teacher’s discussion. A child who has not become self-reliant and independent will always need an adult’s assistance which can be very difficult to have with one teacher in the classroom. A child with no initiative will always wait for an adult to tell them what to do next and may not think for themselves as they were never given an opportunity to choose and be responsible for their own choices. A child who is used to working by himself and with others will adjust easily in the classroom.
In terms of the scope of our curriculum, children will learn to read, write, and compose sentences to paragraphs. In Mathematics, they will learn mathematical operations, solve and understand word problems, and a lot more. They will appreciate the world they live in as they explore Science, History, and Geography. They will be exposed to music, arts, and gardening. We say that everything we learn passes through our senses, indeed Montessori has designed special materials that will hone the senses of the children.
Will a child with special needs suit the Montessori Method?
The Montessori Method was first used with children with special needs. Dr. Montessori had these children take a state exam and they faired the same, and some even higher than those children who were considered ‘normal’. This made her wonder what is in the educational system at that time that these children are not able to maximize their potential. And so, when she was given the chance to apply her method with normal children, the result was remarkable.
So, yes, the Montessori method is suitable for children with special needs. However, we have to first know what particular needs a child has for us to know if our teachers and our environment can accommodate them. If not, we will either recommend a shadow teacher or even refer the child to a center that can better support his needs.
We offer a whole-day program. The children stay for lunch, take a nap, and continue their lessons in the afternoon. The whole day program is compulsory for children in Kindergarten. They spend more time in their Language (English, Chinese, and Filipino) and Math subjects in the afternoon. However, this setup is optional for children below 5 years old.
What is your policy on child discipline? Bullying?
In Montessori, we show appropriate behavior and acceptable social manners through what we call Grace and Courtesy lessons. We are aware that our children come from different families with varying values and practices. Therefore, it is important that at the beginning of the school year, the children are shown lessons relating to social skills. We also allow children to resolve their conflicts through the use of the peace rose corner. Here, the children in conflict will be able to express their feelings as they take turns in holding a rose and giving each other a chance to speak. The children will learn to listen to each other and resolve disagreements in terms that are acceptable to both parties. Though the children are given freedom in the classroom, they are also bound by certain rules and those are ‘limits’ that they have to conform to. These freedom within limits are as follows: Respect for oneself, Respect for others, and Respect for the environment.
Should a child exhibit behaviors that are against the limits, the teacher will speak to the child using the I-message and positive feedback. If such behavior continues, the teacher will write a report on this and let the school Director know. The parents will be informed through writing about this and suggest strategies to modify it. If the behavior persists, the parents will be called for a meeting in school to further discuss the situation and to know how the child behaves at home. We will patiently work with the family to help the child improve his behavior. The school may require the parents to seek the help of a specialist to identify the specific needs of the child and how they can be appropriately addressed. The child may also be sent home from school if his/her behavior endangers him or others. If the behavior persists, this may lead to excluding the child from attending the CKS College Montessori.
Montessori education is specifically non-competitive and particular in avoiding rewards and punishment to encourage the development of intrinsic motivation for learning in children. Our multi-age classrooms make children aware of each other’s abilities and work at their own pace. The achievements of others encourage them to aspire to tackle learning challenges. They are observed and assessed according to their abilities and pace.
Our prepared environment, the classroom, contains materials specifically designed to foster the achievement of a child’s appropriate developmental milestones and the sequential mastery of skills and concepts across a range of disciplines. We record and keep track of all the materials presented to each child, all materials practiced, and all concepts understood by the child. Instead of assigning a numerical or letter grades, parents are invited to speak with the teacher to get personal assessments of how their child is doing.
Is it okay for my child to be enrolled in the Montessori program if this is his/her first time attending school?
Absolutely! This is the best place for your child to have his/her first schooling experience. In CKS Montessori, we ‘follow the child’ which means that we give great respect to your child’s uniqueness and individuality. We carefully observe the children and try to understand how they learn and what their interests and needs are. We then carefully plan out lessons that are specifically made for your child and we only move onto the next lesson when the child is ready. We allow them to grow naturally wherein we follow their own pace. We will be guiding those children who experience delays and difficulties, while we will keep on challenging those who are advanced. For a child who is having delays or difficulty, we will guide them while for those who are advanced, we will keep them challenged.
Are there any required skills or knowledge that my child needs to learn before attending a Montessori class
Our requirement for children who will be joining our 3 to 5 Level class is that the child should already be toilet trained. They should already have well-balanced coordination as they will be walking around carrying trays with objects in them. The child must have spatial awareness of his body.
We will be assessing your child before admission, should there be any special need that has to be addressed, we will require the parents to see a developmental pediatrician and specialist to work with us to ensure that we will be able to provide your child the support he/she will need.
Why is Montessori teaching “history” to a preschooler?
Time is an abstract concept. In the 3 to 6 level, history is presented to them in a concrete way where they see the passage of time. They will experience how long is a minute is compared to an hour. They will see how each day passes and how it completes a month and eventually to a year. They will be able to connect their own daily experiences as well as special events that occur in their life. They will realize that there is a lifetime for everything, a beginning, a middle, and an end.
When you say Individualized lesson plan, is it one on one teaching?
Answer回答:
Individual Lesson Plan pertains to a specific set of lessons prepared for a particular child. In Montessori, we believe that children may be similar in some ways but can never be the same. It is in their uniqueness that this Individual Lesson Plan stems. Lessons may be taught alone with a child or it may also be in small groups if lessons are the same with other children.
The School Admissions will then conduct an interview and schedule your child for screening/assessment.
To create the best fit for your child and family, CKS College reserves the right to assign children to a class and to refer any child deemed to be a better fit to another school.

Why are the rates for the Montessori program significantly higher than the regular program?
An authentic Montessori program has so much investment not only in the environment but as well as the teachers. The Montessori method has a specific way of teaching. It requires special training for the teacher to truly imbibe Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy and pedagogy. It takes a teacher more than a year to complete a Montessori course, which is in fact expensive. We also need to fully equip our environment with the materials needed to cover the scope and sequence of studies in a 3-year program. These materials are very expensive as well. Not only that, we have to keep our classroom always beautiful and presentable. If something is broken, we have to change it right away. If any material is destroyed or missing a piece, we can no longer have it in the room and it has to be changed. We need to maintain the completeness of all the materials in all areas of learning. The children are also free to repeat their work as many times as they want. Therefore, we will need to replenish our supplies as often as we need to. We have food preparation activities wherein children could go to our kitchen and make their snacks.
